On Wednesday night in Assam, forest personnel rescued five exotic monkeys and a wallaby from suspected smugglers. The creatures were rescued from six cages in a car after a tip, according to a statement from the state forest agency. A suspected smuggler from Maharashtra was apprehended, while another attempted to flee the scene.
According to an official, they are attempting to determine the species of the monkeys, which are thought to have been smuggled through Myanmar. “Further investigation is ongoing to determine where the animals were caught and to what destination they were being transported,” according to the statement.
The recovered creatures were initially considered to be chimpanzees, but they were eventually identified as siamang gibbons, a species native to Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
