The Iranian national football team's players who chose to remain silent during the playing of their anthem prior to their match against England at the FIFA World Cup may face repercussions at home, according to a report.

Iranian supporters inside the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar, praised the team's decision not to sing their own national anthem by holding signs that read "Freedom for Iran" and "Woman, Life, Freedom" in support of the large protests that have erupted around the nation. After Kurdish Mahsa Amini, 22, died in police detention for wearing her hijab improperly while she was a suspect, protests broke out in Iran.

According to David E. Guinn, a research professor of international law and human rights at the University of Albany, the Iranian players' families "may face substantial consequences, including detention and/or jail," as a result of their stance in the game.

David E. Guinn noted that in trying to put an end to the turmoil, especially in public places, "the Iranian dictatorship has plainly proved its commitment and cruelty."

While the players' reputation in the public eye may serve as a temporary shield for them, especially while they are participating in the World Cup, it will also make them more of a source of concern for the government. David E. Guinn continued, "They don't want well-known people coming forward and fan the flames.
