Meghalaya mourns 6 deaths in border violence, Cherry Blossom festival cancelled ; CM condoles ,announces ex-gratia
"The Government of Meghalaya would take all measures to ensure that justice is served and that action is done against those responsible in this heinous act.
According to the Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, all festivities in Meghalaya, including the Cherry Blossom festival, have been postponed as a result of this Tuesday morning's shooting incident at Mukroh Village on the Assam-Meghalaya border.
The Meghalaya government will approach the Union Home Minister to convey its concerns following the event at Mukroh, according to the Chief Minister, who called today's emergency meeting.
Conrad stated that the incident occurred entirely within Meghalaya and that a FIR had been submitted. The event claimed the lives of six people and critically injured another two, according to information.
"Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards' gunfire resulted in the deaths of six people. Five of the six people who passed away were inhabitants of Meghalaya, while one was an Assam Forest Guard employee, according to the Chief Minister.
My sincere sympathies go out to the families of the late Sh. Thal Shadap, Sh. Nikhasi Dhar, Sh. Sik Talang, Sh. Tal Nartiang, and Sh. Chirup Sumer. May these priceless souls find eternal peace, the CM prayed in a statement.
The event in which Assam Police and Assam Forest Guards entered Meghalaya and used unjustified gunfire is highly condemned by the Meghalayan government.
He declared, "The Government of Meghalaya would take all measures to ensure that justice is served and that action is done against those responsible in this heinous act.
The deceased's surviving relatives would receive ex-gratia payments of Rs 5 Lakh each.
