At least two people were killed in Bengaluru on Wednesday after torrential rains flooded streets and homes in various parts of the city overnight, raising concerns about the city’s preparation as the monsoon approaches and more rain is anticipated.
Two workers, Dev Vrat from Bihar and Ankit Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, drowned on Tuesday evening in Ullal Upanagara while working on a Cauvery drinking water project pipeline. Another of their coworkers escaped from the pipeline just before it was about to be swamped.
Basavaraj Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka, offered a compensation package of 5 lakh for the deceased’s family and 25,000 for those whose homes were damaged on Wednesday.
“Because rain is predicted to persist for the next two to three days, residents in low-lying regions have been advised to take preventive measures….preparations for the rainy season have been made, and drains have been cleaned, but there are some geographical factors as well: “Bengaluru can’t handle even 90 mm of rain; on top of that, work on gas lines, water lines, and cables is underway,” added Bommai.
On Friday, May 20, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai also visited numerous areas in Bengaluru that had been flooded due to recent severe rains.
Thunderstorms with lightning are expected in Bengaluru, along with light to moderate rain, according to the Meteorological Centre in Palace Road.
Meanwhile, the India meteorological department (IMD) predicted on Wednesday further rain in the city over the next 24 hours . According to IMD data, Horamavu in the city’s eastern outskirts received 155 mm of rain, while at least another 10 places received more than 100 mm.
