IMD issues a new weather warning for the Northeast. Heavy to extremely high rainfall, with exceptionally heavy rainfall in isolated areas, is very likely in Meghalaya, and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is very likely in Assam. Until May 21, Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh are under orange alert. Tripura, Manipur, Nagaland, and Mizoram have been placed under a yellow alert until May 21.
Massive landslides and waterlogging were associated with adverse weather and constant rain at various spots in the Lumding-Badarpur hill portion of Indian Railways’ North-East Frontier(NFR)zone. In this steep terrain, this resulted in damage to the railway track, bridges, road, and communication network.
Floods and landslides have wrecked devastation across Assam, and the flood situation remains dire, with the number of people impacted reaching four lakh across 26 districts. More than five people have been killed, and the whereabouts of a man who was swept away by floodwaters are unknown. The constant rain and landslides also wreaked havoc in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh.
However, if all goes according to the IMD and no more weather alerts are issued after May 22, a breath of relief can be expected.
