In Meghalaya, the Congress was startled when 12 of its members moved to the TMC yesterday evening. Mamata Banerjee’s historic triumph in Meghalaya, which included the joining of 12 of 17 Congress MLAs led by Mukul Sangma late last night, began with a meeting between electoral strategists Prashant Kishor and senior Congress leader Mukul Sangma. In the 60-seat Meghalaya Assembly, the TMC will be the main opposition.
The anti-defection statute in India permits two-thirds of legislators from one party in the assembly to switch parties without being disqualified. This means that these 12 MLAs will now represent the TMC in the Meghalaya assembly.
According to Mr. Sangma, it all started when the central leadership chose Vincent Pala to manage the party’s state unit.

Sangma and MLA Charles Pyngrope told a press conference in Shillong that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s political strategist Prashant Kishor helped seal the deal that established the TMC the state’s main opposition party.
Meanwhile, Mamata Banerjee extended an open invitation to any leader who wished to join Trinamool in its fight against the BJP in Delhi yesterday. When asked about a possible meeting with Congresswoman Sonia Gandhi, she erupted, demanding whether it was “mandatory.”
Taking a shot at the recent defection of 12 congress members to the TMC in Meghalaya, the BJP claimed that blaming Rahul Gandhi for the defection is unfair.
BJP’s West Bengal coordinator said It is wrong to blame Rahul Gandhi for the defection in Meghalaya, tweeted Amit Malviya. He made no request that they leave. They had simply made the decision to depart.
