By defeating the opposition candidate, Yashwant Sinha, in a lopsided election, Droupadi Murmu made history on Thursday by becoming India’s first tribal women president. The electoral college, which consists of MPs and MLAs, counted the votes over the course of a day, and Murmu, 64, who received more than 64% of the legitimate votes, defeated Sinha by a wide margin to become the nation’s 15th president. Ram Nath Kovid was the previous president. The returning officer PC Mody announced Murmu as the victor and noted that she received 6,76,803 votes against Sinha’s 3,80,177 after the lengthy, over-ten-hour counting procedure was concluded.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president JP Nadda visited Murmu at her home to extend their greetings as soon as it was revealed that the NDA presidential nominee had passed the halfway point.
“India creates history. A daughter of India from a tribal community born in a rural area of eastern India has been elected our President at a time when 1.3 billion Indians are commemorating Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav!,” Modi tweeted. He offered Murmu his congratulations on winning the most important constitutional position.
Celebrations in her hometown of Rairangpur to congratulate “Odisha’s daughter” got underway soon after counting started and she crept closer to the halfway point, with folk singers and tribal dancers performing on the streets. Murmu is a member of the Santhals, one of the major tribes in the nation.
She was chosen as the presidential contender for the ruling NDA in the elections on July 18 and shot into the national spotlight. She was born on June 20, 1958, in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. Murmu is a Rama Devi Women’s College arts graduate.
She married banker Shyam Charan Murmu, who passed away in 2014. The couple also had a daughter and two sons. In a period of seven years, from 2009 to 2015, she lost her husband, two sons, mother, and brother. Murmu identifies herself spiritually with the Brahma Kumaris.
She started her ascent up the BJP ladder in Rairangpur. She began her career as a councilwoman in the neighbourhood Notified Area Council in 1997 and advanced to become a minister in the BJD-BJP coalition government of Odisha from 2000 to 2004. She was named governor of Jharkhand in 2015 and held the position until 2021.
On May 18, 2015, Murmu took the oath of office as the first female governor of Jharkhand. For the majority of the governor’s six-year term, the BJP controlled the Jharkhand government. During her time in office, the BJP controlled the Union Government.
After losing her husband, two sons, mother, and brother in the space of just six years, between 2009 and 2015, Murmu, who is thought to be quite spiritual, adopted the Brahma Kumaris movement. She is an avid practitioner of their meditation practises. To get where she is now, she had to overcome several obstacles.
She faced several obstacles on her way to this position because she comes from a small town and a tribal culture. In such a short period of time, she lost her husband, two sons, mother, and brother, which is enough to shatter anyone. Despite all the difficulties, she overcame them and did not let them stop her. Having the first tribal woman president and the second female president is a proud time for the country.
