Indians Scientists Discover A Material That Can Convert Infrared Light To Renewable Energy

Indian scientists reportedly found a substance that converts infrared light into sustainable energy. According to a news release on July 5, scientists at Bengaluru’s Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) have found a novel substance termed “single-crystalline scandium nitride (ScN)” that can transform infrared light into sustainable energy.

To put things in context, although infrared radiation is invisible to humans, we can nevertheless feel its heat. Infrared radiation is used in fancy night vision goggles that you see in movies to let people see in the dark.

And now, according to scientists, such light might be transformed into renewable energy.

The government press statement stated that the new substance, ScN, is helpful for “solar and thermal energy harvesting and for optical communications devices.” ScN has the ability to emit, detect, and manipulate infrared light.

Maurya and colleagues have used a phenomena known as polariton excitations, which happens in tailored materials when light combines with either the collective free electron oscillations or the polar lattice vibrations. “Infrared sources, emitters, and sensors are in high demand across a wide range of industries, including electronics, healthcare, defence, and energy technology. According to Dr. Bivas Saha, an assistant professor at JNCASR, “our study on infrared polaritons in scandium nitride will enable their use in many such devices. In addition to JNCASR, scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.) and the University of Sydney took part in this work, which was just published in the scholarly journal Nano Letters.
