Japanese encephalitis has claimed the lives of two more people in Assam this month, bringing the total to 10, according to officials on Tuesday.
With 12 new cases recorded by the state in the last day, there have already been over 90 infections this month. According to the National Health Mission (NHM), Assam, at least 10 persons have died as a result of Japanese Encephalitis (JE) in Assam over the past few days.
According to an NHM official statement, since July, the state has seen 98 cases of JE. Twelve new fresh cases were recorded; three from the district of Morigaon, two from each of the districts of Karimganj, Nagaon, and Sonitpur, and one each from the districts of Chirang, Darrang, and Tinsukia.
Meanwhile, two fatalities were recorded in the districts of Barpeta and Jorhat, bringing the overall death toll to ten. Notably, JE and malaria claim many lives in Assam every year, particularly during the monsoon season, which typically lasts from May to October. In order to deal with the crisis brought on by the Japanese encephalitis outbreak, the NHM has also released standard operating procedures and recommendations.
