G.P Singh, Assam’s special DGP (law and order), said on Tuesday that the probe into the mob killing of an All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) leader last month would most likely be over by the first week of January 2022. The chief minister has asked Singh to personally supervise the probe into the death of Animesh Bhuyan, the education secretary of the Brahmaputra Anchalik section of AASU (Golaghat), in a mob attack in the heart of Jorhat town on November 29, 2021, and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
During a visit to Jorhat to assess the progress of the investigation, Singh told reporters that the investigation has progressed at a rapid speed.
“In the meantime, the incident’s CCTV footage and mobile phone recordings have been collected and forwarded to Guwahati’s forensic science laboratory. “The court has recorded the statements of the witnesses, which include both citizens and police officers,” the special DGP added. He also stated that the full procedure will take an additional 10 to 12 days to accomplish.
“I am confident that by the first week of January 2022, the investigation of the case will be done, and we will be able to file a strong charge-sheet in the case,” Singh added. The mob also attacked two other members of the students union who had accompanied Animesh to Jorhat from his native area. They were eventually admitted for treatment to Jorhat Medical College and Hospital.
Following that, police detained 13 people, including the main suspect, Kola Lora alias Niraj Das, who died a day later after being hit by a police escort car while attempting to flee police custody. Two more suspects were later apprehended based on evidence.
Following that, the Jorhat superintendent of police asked to local witnesses to come forward bravely and assist police by presenting facts, videos, and statements relating to the lynching so that a strong charge-sheet could be prepared.
