Karnendu Bhattacharjee, a Silchar-based Rajya Sabha member, passes away

Karnendu Bhattacharjee, a seasoned Congressman and twice-elected Rajya Sabha member from Silchar, passed dead on Friday at around 9:45 am in a hospital in New Delhi after dealing with age-related ailments. His wife Nandini Bhattacharjee and two daughters predeceased him at age 84.

The chief minister, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, offered his condolences on the renowned politician's demise. The Chief Minister stated in a tweet: "Saddened by the passing of seasoned Congressman and former Silchar MLA and MP Karnendu Bhattachajee. His contribution to Assam's socioeconomic development can never be forgotten.

I remember our friendship with joy. I send the bereaved my sincere sympathy. Prana Shanti!" Ajit Singh, a former minister in the Congress, expressed his sorrow over the death of Bhattacharjee, whom he considered to be his political guardian.

Tamal Kanti Banik, the president of the Silchar District Congress, also expressed his sorrow and noted that Bhattacharjee's demise leaves an unfillable vacuum in the organisation.

Bhattacharjee, a resident of Malugram, had a distinguished political career working for the Congress party. Bhattacharjee served as the MLA for Silchar from 1985 to 1991 in addition to serving two terms as an MP in the Rajya Sabha from 1996 to 2008, according to reports.According to sources at the Silchar District Congress offices, Bhattacharjee was a father figure in the party and played a pivotal role in uniting the party's grassroots workers. According to accounts, he presided over the District Congress for almost three decades.

According to additional reliable sources, Bhattacharjee's mortal remains would be transported to Silchar for final ceremonies.
