As rescue personnel rescued additional victims from the rubbles on Sunday, the death toll from devastating flash floods triggered by torrential rains and landslides in hilly areas of two central Kerala districts increased to 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to assess the situation.
In Kottayam, at least 12 persons have gone missing. All 12 bodies, as well as the body of someone who had not been reported missing, have been found.
In the Koottickal area of Kottayam district, heavy rain causes landslides, devastation, and destruction. The search and rescue mission is still ongoing. “For the time being, the situation is under control.” It will cause complications if it rains excessively at night. A total of 12 bodies have been found, and an investigation is currently underway. One person’s body was also discovered who wasn’t on the list. “There have been no further reported missing persons,” says Kottayam Dist Collector PK Jayasree.
However, 11 districts have been placed on orange alert, and 105 relief camps have been established so far, with the number of relief camps potentially increasing if necessary.
The NDRF and SDRF have been assigned to rescue operations. The Indian Navy, Army, and Air Force are all on high alert. A Bengaluru-based Engineer Task Force has also been dispatched to Kerala to assess the situation.
11 teams will be deployed by the National Disaster Response Force. So far, 33 individuals have been rescued, including eight women and seven children.
The intensity of the rain has decreased in most parts of Kerala as of this morning, but it continued to rain throughout the night. There haven’t been any new floods yet.
