Lakhimpur Kheri Violence: Uniion Minister's son, Ashish Mishra to stand trial on charges of killing four farmers
A municipal judge denied Mishra's request to have the case dismissed and announced that charges would be filed against him on Tuesday (December 6).
The son of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Ajay Mishra Teni, Ashish Mishra, will go on trial for allegedly running over four farmers in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh, last year. A municipal judge denied Mishra's request to have the case dismissed and announced that charges would be filed against him on Tuesday (December 6).
When Mishra's bail request was being heard on November 25, the Supreme Court instructed the trial court to schedule the matter for charge framing. Even though the chargesheet had already been presented, the trial court had not yet issued the proper directives regarding the formulation of the charges, it was informed to a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Vikran Nath. The court instructed it to formulate charges within a week, noting that the case will be heard by the trial court on November 29.
Three SUVs, including an Ajay Mishra-owned Thar, plowed over a gathering of farmers who were protesting in Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3 of last year. A journalist, four farmers, and several more people suffered fatal injuries.
Two BJP leaders as well as the driver of the Thar car were slain in the ensuing violence.
Ashish Mishra was one of 13 people the SIT had detained for the killing of two journalists and farmers. A chargesheet was submitted by the SIT on January 3 against 14, including Ashish Mishra and his uncle Virendra Shukla.
