According to a zoo official, six lions and six tigers evacuated from near Kyiv arrived at a zoo in Poland on Thursday after a two-day journey that included skirting fighting frontlines and coming face to face with Russian tanks. The animals, along with two wild cats and a wild dog, were driven approximately 1,000 kilometres (600 miles) to the Polish border by a Ukrainian truck, evading the invading Russian soldiers’ bombardment of the Zhytomyr region.
The animals will be kept at the Poznan Zoo for the time being. Ewa Zgrabczynska, the director of the zoo, who assisted in the evacuation, said she has already made contact with a number of western organisations interested in taking the animals in.
