The ballot counting for the first round of the municipal elections in Madhya Pradesh started on Sunday at 9 a.m. A dharna was set up outside the stadium by Sanjay Shukla, a candidate for mayor of Indore, who claimed to have been harassed by the police and local officials. He asserted that despite having valid passes, the Congress staff members were not allowed admission to the stadium where the counting was occuring. The BJP is in the lead in eight out of the 11 Municipal Corporations, according to early trends.
Elections for 133 local authorities, including 86 town councils, 36 municipal councils, and 11 municipal corporations, were held on July 6. In the first round, 61 percent of eligible voters participated. On July 20, there will be a count for the second round of the urban bodies elections.
In 11 municipal corporations, including Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Sagar, Satna, Singrauli, Chhindwara, Khandwa, Burhanpur, and Ujjain, voting for mayors took place in the first round. There will be a total of 101 people vying for the 11 mayoral positions.
In contrast to Bhopal, where only 51.0% of voters cast votes, Ratlam, Devas, and Agar Malwa had more over 80% of the recorded first-phase turnout of 61.0 percent. In the cities of Indore and Ujjain, respectively, 76 and 76.60 percent of voters cast ballots.
