The state’s five Congress MLAs have been suspended for three years by the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
The five MLAs – Ampareen Lyngdoh, Mayralborn Syiem, Kimfa Marbaniang, PT Sawkmie, and Mohendro Rapsang – had already been given show-cause notices and suspended from the party for supporting the NPP-led MDA government despite being in opposition.
The AICC’s disciplinary commission recommended their suspension, as did the actions taken against two party leaders. It’s puzzling that the MLAs haven’t been removed despite their backing for a government in which the BJP is a key coalition partner.
After the 2018 assembly elections, the Congress emerged as the single largest party, garnering members in the 60-member parliament. After they expressed displeasure with the congress leadership over Pala’s nomination as State Congress Chief, Dr Mukul Sangma joined Mamta Banerjee’s party.
In February-March 2023, elections for the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly will be held.
