Meghalaya: Drilling for water leads to a potential hidden oil strike in Garo Hills .
It was claimed that fire started to erupt from a hole in the earth while drilling deeply for groundwater as part of a Jal Jeevan Mission program.

In the South West Garo Hills of Meghalaya, under Mahendraganj police station in South West Garo Hills district, a chance of potential exploration of oil in Kendrakona hamlet has sparked excitement among locals after it was claimed that fire started to erupt from a hole in the earth while drilling deeply for groundwater as part of a Jal Jeevan Mission program.
The Mahendraganj Fire and Emergency Service (F&ES) was alerted right away by the villagers, who quickly put out the fire. But after some time, a kind of froth started to leak out of the same hole.
The area was promptly sealed off for the protection of the locals. Up until the report was filled out, no injuries or casualties were reported. Many questions are still unanswered because no one from the administration can confirm the facts.
"Since our district lacks the expertise to fully comprehend what has been discovered, the state administration has been informed of the situation so that it can take any additional necessary action. According to SWGH deputy commissioner G Kharmawphlang, "we are unsure if they have discovered an oil reserve or fuel dump, and this information can only be validated after experts visit the area".
"ONGC has previously conducted oil exploration in a variety of locations. But after oil prospecting in such areas was halted, people started to settle there. According to a top SWGH administration officer, "We don't know exactly what it is or why flames flowed out of the earth.
Experts are reportedly on their way to the Kendrakona village to assess the situation and determine whether the haphazard drilling actually resulted in the finding of an oilfield.
In Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district, Oil India Limited (OIL) last year made the discovery of a sizable gas reservoir.
A thermogenic gas deposit with a high methane percentage has apparently been found by the OIL. In the East Khasi Hills district of Meghalaya, the community of Dholai Malai has seen the discovery of a gas resource.
