Meghalaya government signed boundary agreement at Assam's demand: Mukul Sangma

Mukul Sangma, the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has charged that the Meghalaya administration signed the boundary deal with Assam on "the demand" of the neighboring state. He asserted that the people of Meghalaya had rejected the agreement. He stated on Tuesday as he submitted his nomination for the assembly elections on February 27 that "anything that is not acceptable to the people is not acceptable to us."

Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam and Conrad Sangma of Meghalaya signed a deal in March to settle a five-decade-old dispute in six of the twelve contested areas along the two states' 884.9 km-long border. In August 2021, the two states established three panels for discussion of the border dispute. After two rounds of negotiations between the states, Sarma and Sangma handed a draft resolution to Shah on January 31 for the Union home ministry to review.

In a previous release of its manifesto, the Meghalaya Trinamool Congress declared that it will rescind the border Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that it had signed with the Assam Government.

Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of AITC, said: "When we make a commitment, we fight till the very last drop of blood to see it through. We guarantee that the TMC's promises for Meghalaya will be carried out by our party within 100 days of becoming the government "he continued.
