Meghalaya: North Garo Hills Catholic Church vandalized by unknown miscreants

In Meghalaya’s North Garo Hills village of Daram, one of the oldest Catholic church is said to have been destroyed by some unidentified miscreants. According to accounts, while all the priests were in Tura for a church retreat programme on the night of August 25 and August 26, the idols of Jesus Christ and Mother Mary were smashed by miscreants. The Church elders in Resubelpara, in the state’s North Garo Hills, have filed a FIR with the police in this respect.

All the jewels were unharmed even though the miscreants smashed the sculptures including statues of Lord Jesus Christ, Mother Mary and Saint Joseph. The holy crucifix that is located on the upper portion of the church wall above the altar, where the holy Eucharistic is celebrated, reportedly was also attempted to be damaged by the attackers, but they were unsuccessful.

Following the event, people are speculating that a 25-year-old man with epilepsy who is mentally challenged is responsible for the vandalism because in the past he has destroyed other revered church icons inside homes in Daram village. But the truth won’t surface until a police probe.
