Meghalaya's 'Chhat Puja' celebrations ended today with hundreds of devotees thronged the ghats in celebration

The three-day "Chhath" festival came to a close on Monday morning when devotees offered the rising sun a second "argha." Chhat Puja celebrations, which took place all over the nation, are now coming to an end, even in Meghalaya. Throughout the whole state of Meghalaya, the festivities were conducted in tranquility.
On Sunday, thousands of worshippers flocked to the many Chhath Ghats located around the Garo Hills area to pray to the Sun in honour of the Chhath festival. On Sunday, hundreds of devotees of "Chatti Maiya" queued up at the numerous locations that were designated Chatth ghats to offer prayers and take baths.
The celebration honours the Sun God (Surya) each year during the months of October and November, six days following Diwali. Particularly the female devotees known as Parvaitin, who pray for the welfare of their families and the prosperity of their progeny, observe the festival's strict traditions throughout the course of four days. These include taking holy baths, going without food, and fasting.
In Tura, the puja was performed at the designated Chatth Ghat at Babupara Stream, meanwhile in Phulbari, worshippers flocked to the Jinjiram River to offer their prayers. The event took place in even the most remote reaches of the Garo hills, such as Mahendraganj South West Garo Hills, when crowds of people flocked to the ghats to pray to "Chatth Maiya."
