In honour of the International Day of the Girl Child, the Ministry of Women and Child Development organised a national conference at the Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi on Tuesday. Urmila Tanti from the Bokel Tea Estate in the Dibrugarh district attended. In order to work with Smriti Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development, on empowering females with non-traditional means of generating income, UNICEF has chosen young people from diverse regions of India. Urmila has been speaking on behalf of the Assamese girls who received skill-development training.
The Adolescent Girls Club of Bokel TE, established as part of an ABITA-UNICEF project, is affiliated with Urmila Tanti. Every week, she showed up for the club meetings. She learned about skill development in one of the sessions. She recognised the value of livelihood skills and subsequently enrolled in a vocational programme at the DDUGKY under the Bokel ITI, where she completed a 3-month diploma programme in spoken English, electrical, and computer technology. Urmila was given the chance to work for a Delhi-based LED manufacturing company after completing the training. After six months of employment, she returned to her hometown.At the conference, Urmila gave a speech and mentioned her desire in using her abilities in Assam. She continued by saying that while Assam has centres for skill development, there are fewer employment possibilities there than in other Indian States. If work possibilities are created locally, the younger generation will benefit. She inspired the next generations to accomplish great things in life. She also showed a desire to keep going to school.
