Protests & celebration on decision of U.S Supreme Court abortion ruling overturning Roe v. Wade

In protest of the justices’ decision to overturn the 50-year-old Roe v. Wade decision, which acknowledged women’s constitutional right to an abortion, hundreds of demonstrators descended on the US Supreme Court on Saturday. Nearly half of the states were expected to outlaw abortion as a result of the court’s broad decision, which had a 6-3 conservative majority.

Clarence Thomas, a conservative justice, argued that the court’s justification would also prompt it to rethink earlier decisions upholding the freedom to contraception, legalising gay marriage across the nation, and striking state laws prohibiting gay sex.

President Joe Biden, who on Friday expressed his profound disappointment with the court’s decision, stated on Saturday that the White House will observe how states implement bans, with administration officials having already made it clear they intend to fight any attempts to outlaw a pill used for medication abortion.

Former President Donald Trump hailed the Supreme Court decision as “a victory for the Constitution, a victory for the rule of law, and above all, a victory for life” during a rally in western Illinois on Saturday. In 2016, he promised his supporters that he would choose judges “who will stand up for the original meaning of the Constitution.” He recalled this pledge to his audience. In the meantime, Andrea Tornielli, a representative of the Vatican, opined in an editorial that pro-life campaigners should also be concerned about other threats to life, such as easy access to firearms, extreme poverty, and rising maternity mortality rates.
