PT Usha set to get elected as first woman IOA chief unopposed

The illustrious PT Usha, who emerged as the sole contender for the top position in the December 10 elections, is poised to become the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Usha, 58, who won several gold medals at the Asian Games and finished fourth in the Olympic 400-meter hurdles final in 1984, submitted her nomination papers for the top position on Sunday along with those of 14 other members of her squad for the other positions.

On Sunday, the nomination period for the IOA elections came to a conclusion. On Friday and Saturday, the IOA elections returning officer Umesh Sinha did not receive any nominations, but on Sunday, 24 applicants submitted their applications for a variety of positions.

One position of female vice president and joint secretary (female) will be up for election. Four positions on the executive council were up for grabs, and 12 people were running. The IOA will conduct elections to choose a president, a senior vice-president, two vice-presidents (one male and one female), a treasurer, two joint secretaries (one male and one female), and six other Executive Council members, of which two (one male and one female) must come from the chosen SOMs.
There will be two representatives of the Athletes' Commission on the Executive Council, one male and one female.
