In the Lok Sabha on Monday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi presented an adjournment motion to examine the topic of statehood and the inclusion of Ladakh in Schedule VI of the Constitution.
The Rajya Sabha was postponed until 2 p.m. on Monday, without completing any work, as opposition members resumed their protests over suspended MPs and other matters. Speaker Om Birla asked Opposition members to end their protests and return to their seats, therefore the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 12 p.m.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi, requested leave to move a motion for the adjournment of House business, stating that he wanted to discuss the matter of forming a committee with stakeholders, including members of the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance, in order to consider their demands. In addition, he brought up the question of unrestricted access to traditional pasture lands in border areas.
On August 5, 2019, the Narendra Modi government in the Centre enacted legislation in Parliament to abolish the special state of Jammu and Kashmir and partition it into two Union territories.
However, locals are becoming increasingly concerned about the subject of Ladakh’s statehood, with a number of notable Union territory officials lately calling for a mass agitation to press for their desire.
