K.Annamalai, the Tamil Nadu BJP President, has asked Chief Minister M.K.Stalin to release Governor R.N.Ravi’s letter while returning the Bill seeking NEET exemption for reconsideration. Annamalai said the BJP will provide its assistance to the administration for the welfare of the people, not to defraud them, after announcing that the party’s representative will not be attending a conference convened by Stalin on Saturday to determine the future course of action.
The state government has responded that it does not have the details of students who took private coaching classes and passed the NEET, in response to a request made under the Right to Information Act, he added.
Annamalai noted that the paucity of data casts doubt on the report of the state government-appointed A.K.Rajan committee. Annamalai also questioned why Stalin is hesitant to reveal the names of students who passed the NEET in 2022 from government-aided, and private schools.
The State’s Governor Ravi has returned the bill seeking an exemption from NEET to the Assembly for reconsideration on February 1, 2022, citing that it is against the interests of the students. The Bill was passed by the Assembly on September 13, 2021.
A statement from Raj Bhavan said the Governor believes the bill is against the interests of the students, especially the rural and economically poor students in the state.
Accordingly, the Governor returned the Bill to the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on February 1, 2022, providing detailed reasons, for its reconsideration by the House, the Raj Bhavan said.
As stated in the statement, Ravi reached this conclusion after studying the Bill for admission to Undergraduate Medical Courses seeking exemption from NEET, as well as the report of the committee constituted by the state government in this regard.
In composing the bill, Ravi also examined the pre-NEET status of social justice in medical admissions, particularly for students from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds.
In the Christian Medical College, Vellore Association vs. Union of India (2020) case, the Supreme Court also comprehensively examined the issue and upheld NEET as it prevents economic exploitation of poor students and is in support of social justice. (IANS)
