Rock Balancing : An Art but at what Cost

The act of balancing or stacking stones on top of one another in various configurations to create spectacular land art sculptures or stone cairns is known as rock balancing. It is also known as stone stacking, stone building, and stone balancing.

Rock balancing gained popularity during the 2010s all around the world through social media. Simple stacks of two or three stones or configurations of jagged or spherical stones that balance in unstable and seemingly implausible ways are examples of balanced rocks.

BENEFIT OF ROCK BALANCING:

Piling stones has evolved into a kind of spiritual activity in recent years. In order to meditate on the divine, some people build towers out of smooth pebbles in nature, with each stone signifying a prayer or thought of thankfulness. The mind must concentrate and become quite silent while practising stone balancing. This yoga exercise of stone balancing is a reflection on impermanence.

The individuals who engage in Rock Balancing views it as a calming and a creativy activity. Not only that, it is also a stress relieving activity for many who practises it.

WHAT NEGATIVE IMPACT IT HAS ?

Environmentalists and conservationists caution that piled stones are beautiful and a convenient method to mark a trail or burial places. Mounds of granite at incorrect location can cause erosion and pose a threat to eggs, tiny animals, and other wildlife.

However, there are consequences to piling stones without any apparent purpose. Environmentalists point out that when rocks are permanently move, insects and tiny mammals tend to leave their homes . Moreover, the native plant-supporting soil that gets subsequent expose beneath the stone starts degrading fast. Additionally, over time, stones piled in streams can change the environment and impede water movement. Before beginning to stack and creating this art, one must look at the bigger picture and consider its  influence on the environment.
