Russia says that nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought

Russia on Wednesday released a statement explaining the dangers of nuclear weapons and stating that "nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought" amid the rising tensions in Ukraine. "Russia rigidly and continuously adheres to the precept that a nuclear war cannot be won and should never be fought when carrying out its policy of nuclear deterrence. Russian doctrines in this area are very precisely defined, only aim to be defensive, and do not allow for broad interpretation "In a statement, the Kremlin discussed averting nuclear war. Concerns have been expressed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) regarding the security situation at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP).

Russian military have been in charge of the ZNPP site since March. Its Ukrainian employees had previously made all operational decisions, but Russia has now said that it has assumed control of the facility and is now doing so. Power interruptions brought on by shelling have plagued the site in recent months, endangering nuclear security and safety at the reactor.

The most urgent duty in the current circumstances, "created by irresponsible and impudent activities aimed at undermining our national security," according to Russia, is to prevent any military confrontation between nuclear-armed states.

The IAEA team said there had been firing in the region of the plant recently, following a period of decreased military activity, which is another indication of the precarious situation in the proximity of the ZNPP. One of the three backup power lines that the ZNPP uses to supply electricity to the town of Enerhodar was momentarily cut off last week due to shelling near the switchyard for the thermal power plant.

Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi of the IAEA said, "Operating employees at the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant are working hard in very trying circumstances to prevent the kind of recurring power disruptions we witnessed in early October."

Even while their tireless efforts have yielded some promising outcomes, the power situation at the facility is still very precarious. In recent weeks, Director General Grossi has held high-level discussions with both Russia and Ukraine in order to quickly agree upon and put into place a nuclear safety and security protection zone around the ZNPP.
