South Korean drama Squid Game landed its first Emmy awards on Sunday, with four award along with the acting honor in the run-up to next week’s battle for television’s best drama.
Lee You-mi won the honour for guest drama actress at the Creative Arts Emmys for playing Ji Young, in the Netflix series.
The actress, on her acceptance speech at a theater in downtown Los Angeles, said a few sentences in Korean before yelling in English: “I’m so very happy!”
On September 12, a televised red carpet ceremony will present awards for lead actor and other categories. Squid Game, the first non-English language programme to be nominated for that accolade, will compete for the top drama award.
Netflix’s Stranger Things, which won five Creative Arts honours, including music supervision, for a season that included Kate Bush’s 1985 song “Running Up That Hill,” is a competitor for the award.
