Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe stated on Monday that the island nation’s economy was in jeopardy and that the cash-strapped country was out of petrol.
“We’ve ran out of fuel… We just have enough petrol for one day at the moment “Wickremesinghe added that his bankrupt country may experience additional difficulties in the months ahead.
Wickremesinghe, who was appointed Prime Minister last week after Mahinda Rajapaksa filed his papers in the wake of persistent protests over the economy, recommended the formation of a national council made up of representatives from all major parties to identify solutions to the issue. He also suggested that the Sri Lankan airlines be privatized.
“These are going to be the most difficult months of our lives. We must be willing to make some sacrifices and confront the challenges that this period will bring “In a speech to the nation, Ranil Wickremesinghe remarked.
Oil is used to generate a quarter of all electricity. As a result, there’s a possibility that daily power outages would reach 15 hours. However, money has already been acquired to avert the issue. We must also raise USD 20 million right away in order to offer gas to consumers, stated the PM.
“The Sri Lankan economy is currently in dire straits. Although the previous government’s budget expected revenue of SLR 2.3 trillion, the PM indicated in Colombo that “this year’s revenue is realistically projected to be SLR 1.6 trillion.”
He further mentioned that two additional shipments of gasoline and diesel were due utilizing the Indian credit line.
