SSC Scam: CBI made its first arrest in Bengal School Recruitment Scam
The CBI made its first arrests in connection with the Bengal school recruitment scam, in which former minister Partha Chatterjee and his aide Arpita Mukherjee were apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on July 23.
Chatterjee and Mukherjee were arrested in connection with the ED’s investigation into the money trail in illicit School Service Commission (SSC) recruitments for West Bengal government-sponsored and aided schools.
Shanti Prasad Sinha, convenor of the special advisory committee constituted for the appointments, and Ashok Saha, secretary of the state School Service Commission, were both detained by the CBI. After the Calcutta High Court ordered the CBI to investigate the case, Sinha and Saha were grilled multiple times. They were arrested on Wednesday following hours of interrogation.
It has been claimed that the ED recovered Rs49.80 crore in cash, jewellery, and gold bars from apartments owned by Mukherjee. In addition, the ED also recovered documents of properties and a joint holding. Under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the duo faces charges.
