Meghalaya will be hosting the upcoming North East Olympics Games beginning October 30 till November 6, 2022 in Shillong.
Meghalaya will hold the second North East Olympic Games, 2022, in Shillong from October 30 to November 6, this year.
The region’s first Olympic games were held in Manipur in October 2018, but the pandemic cancelled the second edition, which was scheduled to be held in Arunachal Pradesh. As a result, this year’s North East Olympic Games 2.0 in Shillong aims to bridge the long gap for aspiring athletes in the region to improve themselves.
Banteidor Lyngdoh, who chaired a high-level meeting between the North East Organising Committee, the Directorate of Sports & Youth Affairs and the North East Olympic Association (NEOA), stated that sports were selected based on the availability of infrastructure and the recommendation of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA).
The events will include archery, badminton, basketball, boxing, football, judo, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, wushu, cycling (mountain bike), golf, weightlifting, and wrestling.
Techi’s suggestion to invite outstanding athletes from the North East who won medals in Tokyo 2020 and the recent Commonwealth Games 2022 was also accepted by the organising committee. North East Olympic Association head Radheshyam expressed hope that the Games would not only provide a platform for the region’s athletes to showcase their abilities, but would also foster togetherness and understanding among the region’s youngsters.
Dr Vijay Kumar D, Meghalaya’s sports and youth affairs commissioner, indicated that all preparations for the Games are on.
This year, about 4,000 athletes from Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura will compete in eighteen Olympic sports disciplines in 13 venues spread across this picturesque pine city, compared to the 2000 athletes competing in 12 disciplines at the first games.
