Assam students trapped in a war zone in Sumy region in Ukraine are sending SOS tweets to PM Narendra Modi asking him to evacuate them immediately from the northeastern town bombarded by Russian troops.
Shivangini Bhattacharyya, a third year student of Sumy State University from Assam, has sent out an SOS tweet requesting immediate evacuation.
Having witnessed this first-hand from my window yesterday, I wish I hadn’t been there. The water supply has been interrupted. Each day, when we wake up, we have a hope that help is on the way, only to have that hope crushed down, she wrote
A student from the state, Jakaria Atikur Rahman Hussain, tweeted, “Today is the 9th day since the war started. Since yesterday there has been no water. If we aren’t evacuated in two days I don’t know if we will survive. We are about 600 Indian students in Sumy. Please help @IndiainUkraine @MEAIndia @narendramodi @DrSJaishankar.”
More than 40 Assam students, who are Sumy State University students in Ukraine, are still trapped in the warzone.
Separate rallies were organized by the Assam National Students Union of India (NSUI), calling for the safe and prompt evacuation of Indian and Assam students stranded in war-torn Ukraine.
Not only from Assam, but from across India, students have written to PM Modi, detailing the dreadful condition they are in and pleading with him to help.
Meanwhile, the Indian embassy in the war-torn country announced today that it is looking into “all conceivable channels” to safely and securely evacuate them. It stated it has addressed evacuation and identification of exit routes with all interlocutors, including the international humanitarian organisation Red Cross, in a tweet sent early this morning.
