On Tuesday, the Supreme Court protected suspended BJP politician Nupur Sharma from being subjected to coercive measures in connection with FIRs and complaints filed on her remarks about the Prophet Mohammad.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala stated that it would somewhat modify its earlier decision on Sharma’s appeal for protection from arrest and the clubbing of nine FIRs against her, adding, “We never intended you to go to every court.”
In response to her request for the FIRs to be combined, the court also sent letters to the Union government and states including Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra. Next, the case will be heard on August 10.
Sharma had also sought expunction of adverse remarks made against her on July 1 while refusing to entertain her plea for clubbing of the FIRs, saying she has been receiving death threats after the criticism.
She has been the subject of numerous FIRs due to her divisive remarks on the Prophet Muhammad that she made on national television.
The bench had stated that Sharma’s words caused regrettable situations and sparked strong emotions all throughout the country while rejecting to hear her appeal.
In addition to sparking nationwide protests by Muslim organizations, some of which turned violent, Sharma’s remarks also had a negative diplomatic impact, leading numerous Muslim countries to officially criticize her. Soon after, she was suspended from the BJP.
