Tamil Nadu announces total lockdown on Sunday's; Transportation disrupted

As part of measures to prevent the spread of the virus, the Tamil Nadu government ordered night curfews that went into force on January 6 and full lockdowns on Sundays that will last until January 20.

 Airline IndiGo has made a statement stating that due to the complete lockdown announced by the Tamil Nadu government to stop the spread of coronavirus, public transportation may be disrupted on January 9, 2022. Passengers are advised to plan ahead of time for additional travel time and adjust their travel arrangements appropriately.

In the meantime, the Chennai division of Southern Railway has amended the schedule of suburban trains on Sundays with effect from January 9 due to the full lockdown announced by the Tamil Nadu government to contain the spread of coronavirus. According to a news release issued here on Friday, the Southern Railway has urged passengers on suburban trains to follow COVID-19 guidelines and cooperate.

On Sundays, 113 EMU services will run between Chennai Central and Arakkonam, 60 services will run between Chennai Central and Gummidipoondi, 36 services will run between Chennai Beach and Velachery MRTS, and 120 services will run between Chennai Beach and Chengalpet. The release said that EMU specials would be operated between Avadi-Pattabiram Military Siding 'E' Depot and Pattabiram-Pattabiram Military Siding 'E' Depot. According to a press statement, 343 train services would be available on Sundays.

On Friday, the number of new COVID-19 cases reached 8,981. Five passengers from the United Arab Emirates, one from the United States, and three from Singapore had tested positive.

At the moment, 30,817 people are receiving therapy. 27,76,413 people have tested positive so far.

In Chennai, 5,77,392 people have been infected, 5,53,075 have recovered, and 15,652 are currently being treated. However, no deaths were reported in the district on Friday.

The overall number of recovered patients increased to 27,08,763 after 984 people were discharged.
