In a new twist in the case of former HNLC leader Cheristerfield Thangkhiew’s assassination, a letter reportedly written by three retired police officers acknowledged to the deceased’s brother Granary Starfield Thangkhiew and received by post has demanded that the investigation be turned over to the CBI if the state government cannot comply with the demand for the suspension of the investigation.
“As per his two sons’ complaint, the investigation should be turned over to the CBI. In a letter addressed to Thangkhiew’s younger brother, Granary Starfield Thangkhiew, the three retired police officials under the umbrella of Ka Sur Ki Pulit Ba Lah Shongthait wrote, “We know that the subordinate officers will not be able to investigate the senior police officers.”

The former police officers wrote in the letter that they’d participated in counter-insurgency operations against the HNLC, and that while there was a lot of gunfire from both sides, they never killed any unarmed militant cadres.
“We are disappointed to find that two senior IPS officials, Jagpal Singh Dhanoa and Shailendra Bamaniya, went to kill Thangkhiew without any proof but on the orders of DGP R. Chandranathan and IGP (Law & Order) Mukesh Kumar Singh,” the letter read.
Former police officers expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that even ministers and MLAs are reluctant to speak out against these IPS employees.
The former police officers also questioned why the state administration quickly suspended the SF-10 troops stationed at the Mawkynroh-Umshing police outpost after their guns were stolen by masked miscreants during the August 15 incident.
Former cops also claimed that when the current DGP was stationed in Assam, there were numerous pending cases against him even in Assam.
Meanwhile, Granary stated that the family has filed their statements with the one-man judicial inquiry commission headed by Justice (retd) T. Vaiphei, Chairman of the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission.
However, according to official sources, the police have also filed a statement on this issue through their lawyer.
