In the wake of tensions on the Ukraine-Russia border, the US has issued a travel warning to its citizens. Russia has stockpiled 100,000 troops near the Ukrainian border, which the US-led countries accuse of being a preparation for war.
“Do not travel to Russia due to continued tensions near the Ukrainian border,” the US State Department advised in a statement, adding that Americans would encounter “harassment” and that the embassy would have “limited capabilities to assist US people.”
Families of American diplomats stationed in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, have been ordered to leave the country “due to the ongoing threat of a Russian invasion.” Russia has deployed tanks, battle vehicles, artillery, and missiles to the Ukrainian border, in addition to personnel.
According to sources, Russia is considering major military action against Ukraine, according to the US State Department. The Russian Foreign Ministry, on the other hand, has accused NATO countries of using disinformation to escalate tensions around Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken dismissed the idea of slapping punitive sanctions on Moscow ahead of any potential invasion on Sunday, saying sanctions should be used to “dissuade” an attack.
Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab of the United Kingdom, on the other hand, warned Russia of “severe consequences” if it attempted to invade Ukraine or install a puppet regime there.
According to the State Department, “US persons in Ukraine should be advised that Russian military action anywhere in Ukraine would have a significant impact on the US Embassy’s capacity to offer consular services, including assistance to US individuals exiting Ukraine.”
