The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will be the country’s first in more over 50 years; the previous head of state to receive this honor was Winston Churchill in 1965.
The body is first carried on a gun carriage as part of a military parade before the state funeral, which is typically reserved for the sovereign, gets underway.
Once at Westminster Hall at the House of Parliament, the body is transferred there from a private burial chapel. Depending on where the service is, another procession is then led to Westminster Abbey or St. Paul’s Cathedral, according to a story in the Independent. Then, a 21-gun salute is fired for the heads of state.
Winston Churchill received the last state funeral in the UK in 1965, while the Queen’s father, George VI, received the last state funeral in the country in 1952.
