Uttarakhand plans a second, more direct path to the Kedarnath shrine
According to sources, state BJP leaders brought up the subject and pushed the need for a separate path during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent trip to Kedarnath in October. District Magistrate Mayur Dixit provided specifics, saying, "We are creating the plan at the district level. We had a meeting and talked about the problem. Our teams are considering various aspects, including viability. We are at the beginning stages, and our teams are laying the groundwork for the project's specifics. There are efforts being made to find a different path. On October 21, during his visit to Kedarnath, Modi laid the cornerstone for the $9.7 billion, 9.7-kilometer Kedarnath-Gaurikund ropeway project.
The Rudraprayag district authorities in Uttarakhand are preparing a different trek route that will shorten the trip by roughly 11 kilometres and save time in order to visit the famed Kedarnath shrine.
The largest number of pilgrims ever recorded, over 15.6 lakh travelled to Kedarnath this year. The number of visitors to the temple increased from 3.1 lakh in 2016 to 4.7 lakh in 2017.
Devotees currently park their cars at Sonprayag and travel to Gaurikund by public transportation after an 18-km journey from Gaurikund to Kedarnath.
Authorities are currently thinking of using the road via Chaumasi to relieve traffic along the route.It would help reduce distance as well as the time. For the Kedarnath visit, pilgrims would, henceforth, have the facility of taking the Rambada and Choti Lincholi route – which would reduce the trek distance to the shrine to 7-km. Earlier, too, a plan had been drafted to construct the road but as the majority of the area falls under forest cover, the project could not take off.
