6 from Assam, Meghalaya in NIA charge sheets for trafficking of Rohingya, Bangladeshi women into India
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has named six people from Assam and Meghalaya in a charge sheet for allegedly trafficking Rohingya and Bangladeshi women into India using forged credentials. On Saturday, the charge papers were submitted before the NIA special court in Guwahati.
“The accused were found to be involved in organized human trafficking of Rohingya/Bangladeshi young girls and women in collaboration with other conspirators based in various parts of India and Bangladesh, according to the investigation. The accused had arranged for the trafficking Rohingya victims’ transportation, lodging, and the acquisition of fake passports, among other things “On Sunday morning, the NIA released a statement.
Sections 120B, 370(3), and 370(5) of the IPC have been utilized to charge the defendants. Five of the defendants are from the Cachar area of South Assam: Kumkum Ahmed Choudhury, Ahiya Ahmed Choudhury, Bapan Ahmed Choudhury, Sahalam Laskar, and Jamaluddin Choudhury. Wanbiang Suting, the sixth individual, hails from Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills.
The six people were apprehended in March of this year. According to the NIA, the human trafficking network was run out of Bengaluru by “main accused” Kumkum Ahmed Choudhury. Assam and Meghalaya share a border with Bangladesh, which has been hosting thousands of Rohingya migrants fleeing ethnic violence in Myanmar.
After numerous Rohingya refugees were arrested in Assam for traveling without legitimate documents, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case in December of last year. The agency is looking into the suspected exploitative trafficking of Rohingyas and Bangladeshis into India, as well as the use of bogus Indian credentials to provide them permanent entry.
