In an assault charge filed by a female police officer, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani was remanded in police custody for five days by an Assam court on Tuesday.
Mevani was charged under IPC sections 294 (uttering obscene comments in public), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assaulting a public servant in the course of duty), and 354 (assaulting a public servant in the course of duty) (using criminal force to a woman intending to outrage her modesty).
He is accused of assaulting a female cop who was escorting him and senior police officers from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar.
When Mevani appeared in court later that afternoon, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mukul Chetia remanded him to police custody.
Mevani, a Congress-aligned Independent MLA, was originally detained on April 19 in Gujarat’s Palanpur town and transported to Kokrajhar for tweeting against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
