The death toll from Assam’s recent massive flooding increased by 14, including six children, bringing the total number of victims of floods and landslides in the northeastern state to 173 in just over 12 weeks.
On Friday, two interministerial central teams (IMCT) from the ministry of home affairs travelled to Barak Valley, the Morigoan and Kamrup districts, and other flood-affected areas.
Authorities reported that three people died in Nagaon before six more died in the Cachar area. One death each occurred in Karimganj, Kokrajhar, and Lakhimpur districts, along with another two in Barpeta.
Officials reported that even after two Inter-ministerial Central Teams (IMCT) from the Union Home Ministry visited the flood-affected areas in Morigoan, Kamrup districts, and Barak Valley on Friday, over 63,000 hectares of cropland were still submerged in addition to the loss of human lives.
Over 29 lakh people in 2,450 villages across 30 districts are still affected by floods, and over three lakh of them are housed in 563 relief camps, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority.
The Kopili, Disang, and Burhidihing rivers, three of the Brahmaputra river’s major tributaries, are all flowing above the danger level threshold.
