China updates its drought alert as the warmth continues
Authorities in southwest China’s Sichuan province extended industrial power cuts to next week even as the drought warning was expanded to a central Chinese province in a scorching summer that is the country’s driest in six decades, state media reported on Saturday.
In a blistering summer that is the nation’s driest in six decades, authorities in south-west China’s Sichuan province extended industrial power cuts until next week, according to state media on Saturday. At the same time, the drought warning was stretched to a province in the centre of the country.
Hubei in China is the most recent province to issue a level four emergency drought warning, according to the official Xinhua news agency. The level four alert was prompted by “continued hot weather” and minimal rainfall in at least 84 counties. A minimum of 5.7 million residents of the province in central China are impacted by the new announcement.
Additionally, according to the Xinhua report, 690,470 hectares of crops were harmed by the drought, and 218 100 people had trouble getting access to drinking water.
