Heavy rains have caused devastation in Saurashtra, mainly Jamnagar and Rajkot. Flooding has destroyed at least 5 houses and damaged 28 more. Two fatalities were also reported, including one person who drowned in flood water and another who died after a wall collapsed as reported on Monday.
The Disaster Management Division of the country’s Home Affairs Ministry reported on 13 September that flooding over the last few days has affected 1,660,254 people across 44 villages in the districts of Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Valsad and Junagadh.
The Indian Navy has joined the rescue and relief efforts in Gujarat where incessant rain and flooding have inundated large parts of the state.
Authorities in Rajkot had on Monday sought help from the Indian Air Force and Navy. Based on the request for assistance, a naval humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) team, consisting of naval divers has been sent to carry out rescue and relief operations.
The administration had earlier also deployed NDRF teams for relief and rescue operations.
The rescue work done by the different rescue team is commendable. These heroes stood beside mankind in every difficult situation. They become ready to sacrifice their lives whenever the nation requires. Meanwhile,many people had to be airlifted by Indian Air Force (IAF) choppers on Monday. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange alert for Tuesday and Red alert for Wednesday for several places of Saurashtra.
The IAF helicopters rescued 22 people stranded at some locations in Jamnagar, officials said, adding that 150 people in all were rescued across the district.
The IAF also rescued seven villagers in Rajkot, while a total of 56 people were rescued all over the district. More than 200 people stranded in the flood waters were rescued and over 7,000 people shifted to safer places in the two districts, officials said.
A national highway in Jamnagar and 18 state highways passing through Rajkot, Jamnagar and Junagadh districts of the Saurashtra region were closed due to flooding, affecting traffic movement. Many villages were cut off as several roads connecting them were inundated, they said.
A bridge over river Fofal collapsed, resulting in the closure of a road connecting Jam Kandorna and Gondal in Rajkot district, officials said.
Rajkot’s Lodhika taluka received the maximum rainfall of 516 mm in the state during the 24-hour period ending at 6 am on Tuesday, the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) said in an update.
During the 24-hour period ending at 6 am on Tuesday, 35 talukas received over 100 mm rainfall, mainly in Rajkot, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Gir Somnath and Devbhumi Dwarka in Saurashtra region, as well as in south Gujarat’s Valsad and Navsari districts, the SEOC said.
Meanwhile, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Gujarat Bhupendra Patel visited the flood affected areas in Jamnagar and Rajkot districts on Tuesday. The CM interacted with local people and took stock of the situation.
Patel who was appointed as the Chief Minister on Monday assured the flood affected people to provide all necessary relief.
