Murmu received 540 votes out of the total 748 votes cast by MPs, while Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha received 208. With the counting of votes for the recently concluded Presidential election beginning at the Parliament House on Thursday morning, India will soon know who will follow Ram Nath Kovind as the country’s 15th President.

According to the support extended by various parties, National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate Droupadi Murmu has a clear advantage over Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha. Upon being elected, Murmu will become the country’s first tribal woman to hold the top constitutional position.

Over 99 percent of 4,796 eligible voters, including 771 MPs and 4,025 MLAs, voted in the Presidential elections on Monday.
