The incident occurred at a refinery unit during shutdown-related maintenance, according to the IOC.
“The major cause appears to be a flash fire that resulted in burn injuries to 44 people, three of whom have regrettably died as a result of their injuries,” according to the statement.
According to a senior police officer from the Purba Medinipur district, 37 of the 44 injured have been transported to a hospital in Kolkata. Seven of them are in critical condition, he said.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was deeply anguished by the accident and assured all required assistance.
