Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, JD Rymbai, passed away at the age of 88

JD Rymbai, the former Chief Minister and a former leader of the Congress, died on April 21, 2022 at the age of 88. Mr Rymbai was a great statesman who strive hard for the upliftment and progress of the state.

As soon as he learned of the death of previous Chief Minister JD Rymbai, Meghalaya's Chief Minister conveyed his condolences.

Pained to learn about the demise of former Chief Minister of our state, Shri J. D. Rymbai.

Shri Rymbai was a renowned statesman who was beloved by his subjects. His contribution to the growth of our state will be remembered for the rest of our lives. Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma tweeted, "May his soul rest in peace."

Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and Indian National Congress member J. Dringwell Rymbai was born on October 26, 1934. He was compelled to drop out of school due to financial constraints during his graduation. He went on to get his B. Ed (Bachelor of Education) degree later.

After graduating from high school, he was forced to discontinue his studies due to poverty. After working as an assistant teacher in a government school, he was able to support his family. Eventually, he earned a graduate degree and a degree in education (B. Ed. - Bachelor of Education). After these degrees, he became the headmaster of a government school.

He first became involved in politics in 1983, when he ran for the legislative assembly of Meghalaya on the Congress party's ticket from the Jirang constituency. In the same year, he was named deputy speaker of the parliamentary assembly. In 1993, 1998, and 2003, he was re-elected as MLA of Jirang three times in a row. He was chosen speaker of the Meghalaya Assembly in 1993. He has been in charge of many federal ministries since 1998.

He succeeded Lapang as Chief Minister of Meghalaya on June 15, 2006, when a controversy emerged in 2006 over the subject of Lapang's leadership. He served as Chief Minister of Meghalaya till March 2007, when he was re-elected as a result of a decision made by top members of the Congress Party.
