Former footballer from Meghalaya will compete in the by-election to honour his father.
Former Indian footballer from Meghalaya Eugeneson Lyngdoh said on Thursday that he will compete for the United Democratic Party (UDP) in the by-election to Meghalaya’s Mawphlang constituency, which fell vacant after his father S K Sunn died earlier this month.
On September 10, Sunn, a first-time Independent MLA who won the seat in 2018, succumbed to COVID-19. He had pledged his allegiance to the United Democratic Party (UDP).
Hundreds of people gathered at the late MLA’s mansion on Thursday to show their support to his son Eugeneson Lyngdoh, a well-known football player.
Metbah Lyngdoh, the party’s leader, officially nominated the former midfielder as the UDP candidate.
By-elections for the Mawphlang, Mawryngkneng, and Rajabala seats will take place on October 28, with results expected on November 2, according to Chief Electoral Officer F R Kharkongor.
The opposition Congress has decided to run for all three seats and believes it will win, according to party leader Ampareen Lyngdoh.
