Gaint hailstones, storm rocked Shillong at midnight; deaths reported in Assam

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) last week projected further spells of heavy rain over northeastern states, particularly in Meghalaya, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh, for the next several days, and the prognosis proved to be accurate.

Gaint hailstones pounded Shillong around midnight on Saturday, wreaking havoc. Shillongities had a sleepless night due to a hailstorm that brought heavy rain and giant hailstones to the city.

According to an IMD forecast issued earlier this week stated that the city would experience thunderstorms as well as heavy to extremely heavy rainfall.

Storms wreaked havoc on the Ri-bhoi area last week, causing damage to both governmental and domestic structures. Following that, the situation in the Garo Hills became the same.

Meanwhile, storms have claimed numerous lives in Assam.  The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has reported three people have killed in Tinsukia district as a result of storms and tree uprooting, while four people have died in Dibrugarh. In Assam’s Bodoland Territorial Region, two more deaths have been reported in the Baksa district.

According to the government’s ASDMA, 20,286 people in 592 villages in Assam were affected by the storm and severe rain on Saturday.
