Government increased export duty on Petrol by Rs 6, Diesel by Rs 13

In order to reduce the volatility of the Indian rupee against the US dollar, the government on Friday imposed a windfall gain tax on the petroleum sector, where companies were earning abnormal profits because of geopolitical factors.

However, on domestic retail pricing for gasoline and diesel, these actions would not have any negative effects. The costs would stay the same as a result. A domestic supply of petroleum products will be guaranteed by these methods at the same time.

According to a representative of the finance ministry, a cess of Rs. 23,250 per tonne has been imposed on domestic crude production, which will have an effect on major producers like the government-run Oil and Natural Gas Corporation and the private companies Reliance Industries Limited and Cairn India Limited. Small producers with annual crude output of under two million barrels are exempt from the tax.

Taxes of 6 and 13 Rupees per litre have also been imposed on the export of gasoline and diesel, respectively. According to the official, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) exports are now subject to a special additional excise duty (SAED) of six rupees per litre.

Officials stated that due to the steep increase in crude prices in recent months, a cess of 23,250 per tonne through SAED has been levied on locally produced oil. “At prices that are equal to international pricing, domestic crude producers sell their product to domestic refineries. Producers of domestic crude are therefore benefiting unexpectedly. In light of this, a cess of 23250 rupees per tonne has been imposed on crude. The initial official stated that the cess would not apply to crude imports.

The pricing of domestic petroleum products and fuel, he claimed, won’t be negatively impacted by this cess. No cess will be levied on the amount of crude produced by a crude producer that exceeds the production from the previous year, the source added, in an effort to encourage increased production.
