On 20th July, a massive flame at the top of a tower block in east London was extinguished by 125 firefighters and 25 fire engines during a record-breaking heatwave in the United Kingdom.
Smoke billowed from a four-room flat on the 17th floor, according to videos and photographs posted online. There were no reports of injuries, and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported the blaze had been extinguished.
On Wednesday, extreme weather caused wildfires to melt signalling equipment and damage tracks across Britain, disrupting train services. There are photos posted by Network Rail and other operators online showing a level crossing between King’s Cross and Peterborough that has been damaged.
Footage from across the country have appeared on social media, demonstrating the devastation wrought by the record warmth. One of these clips shows houses damaged by a big fire in a community outside of East London, while another shows a forest burning on the side of a motorway.
Because of the high temperatures, a fire alarm went out in one of the theatres. A video from the Globe Theatre shows employees running for cover as the sprinkler system pours water throughout the structure.
“When global warming activates your thatched roof’s anti-Puritan/cannonfire sprinklers,” actor George Fouracres tweeted while releasing the video from the theatre.
Furthermore, train cancellations across the country produced a tense scenario for commuters who were observed sleeping on suitcases and benches at London’s Kings Cross on Wednesday morning, the passengers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
